Who We Are

"We're here to make good things happen for other people."

Una!

We are Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica. Nice to meet you!

Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (Spanish Honor Society) was founded by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese in 1953, to recognize high school achievement in Spanish and Portuguese and to promote interest in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian studies. Our chapter was established by Ms. Shirley Muñoz of Brownsville Early College High School in December 2011. The name of this chapter: Dr. Juliet V. Garcia. Our motto is ¡Todos A Una! which means "Altogether." Our colors are red and gold. Our insignia and seal are those of the mother association.

This chapter was established with the intention to recognize those students who have not only shown interest and success in the Spanish language but are also leaders and exemplary students in all subject areas.

There were many reasons for which we selected the name of our Chapter to be Dr. Juliet V. Garcia...In 1986, she became the first Mexican-American woman in the nation to become president of a college or university.

In 2015, we adopted the motto "We are here to make good things happen for other people" as well as a Declaration of Contribution. This is our sixth year successfully serving our community. As part of our community outreach, we sponsored a food drive for Outcry in the Barrio, and collected 698 items, double the amount of last year.

Throughout the year, we volunteered at La Posada Providencia, a shelter for political asylees, working alongside their clients and participating in their annual Hands and Hearts Fundraiser. We have also spent time with the residents of Spanish Meadows, an elderly nursing home. In addition, we cleared a field at Sabal Palms Sanctuary, a nature reserve, to help build a nursery.  Moreover, a national accomplishment of ours was winning Chapter of the Year.

We have sponsored school events such as our "I MATTER" Campaign and the "I MATTER" Campaign Workshop. The "I MATTER" campaign promoted the importance of self-worth as well as caring for others amongst our student body. To end the campaign, we held a workshop after school consisting of presentations, activities, and bonding.

As part of our efforts to promote the Spanish language and values that Sociedad upholds, we sponsored the chartering of a new chapter within our school district at Pace High School.

This year, we inducted 10 new members and we are especially proud to have had 10 members of Sociedad graduate.
